Tigers Play Catch Up to Mansfield - Boys Basketball

1/28/2019

In a wire to wire win for the Hornets, the Tigers were playing catch up all night as Mansfield wins 83-67.

Mansfield won the tip, scored first and never trailed from that point on. The Hornets were led by Jr. F Samuel Stevens (#33) who scored 17 of his 27 pts in the first half. THS' Sr. G Michael Quinn (#2) also had 27 pts with Sr. G John Martins (#4) dropping 17 pts as well. It seemed like every time THS went on a run the Hornets would hit back to back threes', killing the Tigers momentum. The Tigers never quit though as they were down by as much as 17 pts in the 4th cutting it to a 9 pt deficit but couldn't get any closer as Mansfield won the game 83-67.

Mansfield went on a quick 8-0 run to start the 1st as Samuels hit threes on back to back possessions. Martins dribbled into the paint making a pull up jumper and Quinn hit a three on the next possession to make it 10-5 Hornets with 5:53 to go in the 1st. With under two minutes to go Quinn made a great pass to So. F Tyler Stewart (#30) under the rim who rewarded his generosity to make it 21-14 Hornets. That kindness was repayed as Martins found Quinn underneath the basket and he finished on the other side of the rim with a reverse lay-up to cut the deficit down to three with 1:15 to go in the qtr. Stewart had a nice block on Jr. G Makhi Baskin (#1) with about 38 seconds left but was called for a ticky tack foul with 2.3 to go on So. F Terence Guy (#23) who made both FTs to end the qtr making it 23-18 Mansfield.

The Hornets continued their three point barrage as they started the 2nd on a 10 - 2 run forcing THS to call a timeout three minutes into the qtr. Coach Dacey clearly wasn't pleased with his players for not closing out on the Hornets shooters. The Tigers defensive effort certainly picked up coming out of that timeout and Martins hit a nice 5ft jumpshot along the baseline to make it 35-24 with just under three minutes to go in the 2nd. Martins then took it hard to the rim and should've had the And 1 with just over a minute to go but didn't get a whistle, which seemed to be an unfortunate theme for THS tonight. Samuels closed out the qtr strong for Mansfield scoring the teams 10 of its last 11 pts to go into halftime with a 44-27 advantage.
The 3rd proved to be more of the same as Hornets Sr. G Thomas Dooling (#4) hit an uncontested three at the 6:09 mark to make it 47-27. THS' Sr. F Alex Midouin (#15) got in on the action as he scored on back to back possessions to make it 49-31 as the Tigers kept trying to claw (no pun intended) their way back into the game. Quinn then had five quick points of his own as he made a Steph Curry-like three from way downtown and had a great steal in the passing lane about 20 seconds later as he made the And 1 lay-up and completed the three point play making it 57-40 with 2:15 left in the 3rd. Sr. G Lou Vendrell (#1) hit a tough contested shot at the rim at the 1:45 mark and Martins made both his FTs about 20 seconds later cutting Mansfields' lead to 13. Dooling hit yet another three with 38.9 seconds left which essentially ended the qtr, putting the Hornets back up by 17 giving them a 63-46 advantage going into the 4th.

Give the Tigers credit, they never gave up even when the game seemed out of reach. They even cut it down to a nine point Hornet lead off two made FTs by Martins to make it 69-60 with 4:39 left in the game. But that was as close as THS could get as Samuels hit a corner three on the next trip down the floor for Mansfield. THS made it interesting with about a minute and a half left as they started trapping on defense but only managed one point out of that final stanza. Two made FTS by Samuels and a nice take to the rim by Hornets So. G Matthew Boen (#5) ended the game with Mansfield winning 83-67.

It's hard not to think that had the game been a bit closer the Tigers would've had a few more calls go their way. But the mix of uncommon mistakes on defense plus a few starters again sitting out this game was enough to do them in. The Tigers will look to bounce back in their next game against the (7-7) Stoughton Black Knights, Tuesday, January 29th. Tip-off is at 6:30.

Sr. J. Martins Steps Up and Leads to a 63-58 Victory

1/23/2019

Canton Bulldogs vs Taunton Tigers

Once again THS had another strong outing defensively as it was much needed seeing as three of their key starters were sitting tonight. John Martins had an incredible night as he led all scorers with 30 pts as well as Sr. G Michael Quinn (#2) pouring in 17 pts. The Bulldogs were led by Sr. G Devin Foster (#4) who scored 25 pts. He himself had an amazing accomplishment as Foster eclipsed the 1,000 point mark late in the 4th. It was a free throw game late though as THS went nine for twelve from the line with a little over a minute to secure the victory. Taunton High gets its ninth victory of the year winning 63-58.

The game started out slow offensively for both sides as the first points of the game weren't scored until Martins hit a three at the 5:47 mark. That was just a precursor to the sort of night he would have. The Tigers continued to put pressure on the Bulldogs going on a 7-0 run forcing Canton to call a timeout with 3:10 remaining in the 1st. Canton started to find its rhythm as they sank a couple of threes' late to keep the game close. Quinn made a great inbounds pass to a cutting Danny McDougal (#35) in the final seconds of the 1st giving the Tigers a 13-8 lead.

The 2nd started out just as slow as three minutes ticked off the clock before either team scored. Coach Dacey called a timeout at the 5:35 mark to settle his players because it seemed as though they were forcing some shots. Aiden Pelot (#23) broke the drought as he got the offensive rebound and went straight back up with it to make it 15-8 at the 4:58 mark. But once again Canton hit some threes' late to keep the game close as Foster and Sr. G Ryan Lentol (#21) each buried one in the closing minute. The Bulldogs closed out the 2nd on a 10-2 run to make it 20-20 at half.

Martins was fouled 13 seconds into the 3rd as he made both free throws to give THS a 22-20 advantage. But a few more defensive lapses would plague the Tigers as Coach Dacey called a timeout midway through the qtr for allowing the Bulldogs to take and make threes' on back to back possessions giving Canton its biggest lead 33-26. So. F Tyler Stewart got THS going again offensively as he had deft up and under move in the post to cut the Bulldogs lead to five. Martins then scored six straight points and Quinn had an And 1 take to the rim with 1:09 left in the 3rd to make it 36-35 Tigers. Martins capped off the qtr making another two free throws to make it 38 -38 going into the final qtr.

Quinn broke the tie with a made three at the top of the key at the 6:41 mark to give the Tigers a 41-38 advantage. Martins made a great move baseline to make it 48-41 Tigers and was fouled about 30 seconds later coming up the court as Canton start pressuring the Tigers on their inbounds. The Bulldogs Coach seemed none to pleased with that call as he could be heard conversing with the referee and essentially dismissing him when the ref approached the Coach to explain his reasoning. By that stage of the game it was free throw time as both teams traded attempts with THS hitting 9 of 12 from the line in the final minute and Foster scoring 10 of his 25 in the final minute with a few threes' and a coast to coast take to the rim. In the end the Tigers held on in what was a great effort by both teams as the final score was 63-58.

With some key starters sitting out for the Tigers, they once again fell back on their defense which has been their calling card all season. With extraordinary performances all around, Martins stepped up in a big way, not just offensively but defensively as well as he was vocal all night trying to get his teammates into the right sets. I would once again like to congratulate Cantons' Devin Foster on his incredible career accomplishment as he surpassed the 1,000 point mark with about 30 seconds to go in the 4th. The Tigers next game is against the Mansfield Hornets this Friday, January 25th. Tip-off is at 6:30.

Tigers Outlasted Against Bombardiers - Boys Basketball

1/19/2019

Attleboro Bombardiers vs Taunton Tigers
It was a closely contested and truly fun game to watch. Late game turnovers were the difference in this one as Attleboro pulls away late to win it 63-60.

It truly was a battle between two of the top scoring teams in the league. The leads for either team never got to double digits and defensively, both teams were engaged from tip-off. Jr. F Dante Law (#24) led THS in scoring with an efficient 20 pts, with Sr. G Michael Quinn (#2) pouring in 12 pts as well. Attleboro's Jr. F Qualeem Charles (#35) led all scorers with 21 pts, as he was a force in the paint offensively and defensively. Late game turnovers for THS is what ultimately did them in as the Bombardiers held on to get a three point victory.

The 1st qtr set the tone for how the game played out as Attleboro really tried feeding Charles early to get him going offensively. THS' Dante Law and Sr. F Wesner Charles (#21) had a great two man game going early as Law found Charles twice in a two minute span to make the game 8-6 Attleboro with about 5:30 left in the 1st. Jr. G Naz Kenion (#3) made a strong move to the rim and did so again on the next possession, but missed on his second attempt. Charles was there to get the OREB, but was fouled on his put back attempt and proceeded to make both FTs to give THS its first lead of the game at 12-11 with 2:45 left in the 1st. Quinn hit a 3 with about a minute left and then Law hit a 3 to end the qtr, giving the Tigers a 19-18 advantage.

Law got the crowd roaring as he dunked it from what felt like a step in front of the FT line about a minute into the 2nd. On THS' next possession, he did it again with a great pass on a fast break by Sr. G Lou Vendrell (#1) to make it 24-19 Tigers with 6:46 left in the 2nd. They could never truly break away from Attleboro though, as the combination of Qualeem Charles and Jr. G Bryant Ciccio (#25) kept the Bombardiers in the game. Bryant hit a contested 3 around the 2:20 mark to cut THS' lead down to three. But Vendrell matched him as he hit a 3 of his own on the next trip down the floor to make it 34-28. Attleboro then closed out the half with a made FT by Jr. F Lorenzo Wilson (#23) and followed that up with a nice post move to make it 34-31 THS going into the break.

The 3rd continued the game's close score trend as neither team had more than a three point lead for a majority of the qtr. Wesner Charles had an OREB and went back up with it to make it 36-35 Tigers. Then it was the other Charles' turn as he scored on three straight possessions to give Attleboro a 39-38 lead. A few plays later, Law made a great cross court pass to Quinn on the fast break, who finished strong at the rim with about 2:55 in the 3rd. THS finished the 3rd strong as they went on a 10-2 run to give themselves a 48-43 lead.

Attleboro's Charles found himself in familiar territory as he made a nice move under the rim at the start of the 4th to cut THS' lead to three. About a minute later, Sr. G John Martins (#4) had a nice take to the basket to put THS back up by five, making the score 50-45. Then it was Ciccio's time to shine as he hit two FTs and made a lay-up on back to back possessions to make it 51-50 Bombardiers with 4:50 left in the 4th. The turnover bug reared its ugly head for the Tigers as they started to make a few uncommon mistakes. Attleboro was starting to pull away late as Ciccio hit two FTs with 2:23 left, bringing the score to 60-53.

Martins hit a 3 on the next trip up the floor to cut the lead down to four with 2:00 left in the game. THS then got a steal as Quinn ran up the court for a fast break lay-up to make it 60-58, which was then followed by an Attleboro timeout. Vendrell then had a steal himself and ran up the court. He was fouled at the rim and made both FTs with 35.4 seconds left, making it 62-60 Bombardiers. THS' late game defensive pressure led to another steal with about 20 seconds left as Charles raced up the court, but an errant pass to Quinn under the rim led to a turnover. With Ciccio at the line, he made one of two FTs with 3.2 seconds left, but with an OREB by Attleboro, it was all they needed to run out the clock.

Attleboro held on to win the game 63-60. As disappointing a loss as it was for the Tigers, they never gave up when most teams would have, being down seven with 2:23 left in the game. That effort and intensity plus the experience from this game will serve them well in the future. Their next game is on the road against the Canton Bulldogs, Tuesday, January 22nd. Tip-off is at 6:30.
